Ellie Klemsz is a junior at University High School. She is a three-sport athlete for the Trailblazers, participating in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She is a part of a very strong tradition of Klemsz children at this school and is extending it in dramatic fashion. Ellie is active in many community service opportunities, including volunteering at The Lord’s Pantry with the basketball team. Ellie has exemplified University’s core values both on and off the court. She was generous enough to sit down and answer a few questions that many of us have been waiting years to hear.
How long have you been playing basketball?
I have been playing basketball since the 5th grade.
Why did you start playing?
Everyone played multiple sports at Sycamore (my old school), so it was a fun way for me to hang out with my friends.
What has been your best memory from University basketball?
My best memory would be winning sectionals last year. I was on the court when the final buzzer sounded, and it was one of the most incredible sports-related experiences I’ve ever had.
Who is your favorite professional athlete and/or team?
My favorite basketball team would be the Pacers, but my favorite team of all time would be the St. Louis Cardinals.
What other sports/activities are you associated with at University?
I also play volleyball and softball for University and am currently a Stewardship Representative.
Future plans? College etc.
I have no idea what I want to study in college or where I want to go. I just want to be able to travel around the world some day. This prestigious award opens up a lot of opportunities for me at the next level of education.
My favorite subject would have to be lunch. There is no better part of the day. I heard the final might be tough though, so I better start studying soon.
Anything with chocolate, especially chocolate chip cookies. Maybe even double chocolate if I’m feeling crazy.
Favorite pump-up song?
My favorite pump-up song would be “Everything I Do” by the one and only Timeflies.
I have five siblings. Nick and Ben are both students at University, and my three younger sisters all attend Sycamore. Nick was previously featured as the Athlete of the Week.
