The Lady Trailblazers (5-16) never trailed in a game that saw University grab its seventh win in as many tries against Bethesda Christian (12-9). University scored the first four points of the game, but only led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter that saw both teams struggle—a combined 21 turnovers were committed in that first quarter. The second quarter was much better for the Blazers, scoring the first six points of the quarter (two Elizabeth Orians lay-ups and two Emily Johns free throws), eventually stretching the lead to 21-9 at one point before Bethesda crawled back in the game in the final minute. As the first half buzzer sounded, it was 22-14 and there was still work to do.
And that work was done. The Lady Trailblazers came out on a 14-0 run to start the second half and dominated the third quarter overall, winning it 18-2. Lizzie Berry scored the first four on fast break layups assisted by Victoria Overdorf before a Morgan Wood layup. The game’s only three point basket by Sharla Steiman made it 31-14. The Blazers extended that lead with a Victoria Overdorf steal and layup before Sharla Steiman added three more on a free throw and layup to get the game to 36-14. An Elizabeth Orians layup followed by a Sharla Steiman layup from Cyan Cosby put the lead at 40-16, the largest Trailblazer lead of the evening. A relatively quiet fourth quarter saw the Blazers close the game out, with the final lying at 47-24.
Sharla Steiman led all scorers with 12 points while Elizabeth Orians chipped in 10. The Blazers play again Friday night against Fall Creek Academy (1-19) and have won three of their last four contests.
