In my AP Language and Composition class, we recently read Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, a book that served as the primary catalyst for the initiation of the “go green” environmental movement. Carson writes about the damaging effects of pesticides on the environment and about people’s negligence towards sustainability. She illustrates the importance of taking care of the planet that we live on — both its land and its non-human inhabitants.
After reading this book, the environment became very prominent in my thoughts, so I did what I knew best and started to take pictures. Some of these photographs were also inspired by the work of Sally Mann, a photographer whose work focuses on the outdoors. The type of photography ranges from medium format film to digital.
