UHS Basketball: Starting off the Season Right

UHS Basketball: Starting off the Season Right

By Jay Maturi

The aroma of semi-burnt popcorn. A wave of Blaze Craze shirts. Mrs. Webster’s granddaughter running step by step with Mr. Blanding’s daughter. Pounding drums. Jon Gray. Horrendous referee calls. The name “Aaaaaaaayush Guptaaaaaaa.” An abundance of U’s held in the air with a hush in the crowd.

Basketball season has arrived.

The girls team, coached by Justin Blanding, has been dominant this season. Starting off the season with a 5-game win streak, they won an underdog-victory over Brebeuf by 12, marking the first UHS victory over Brebeuf in the history of girls basketball. They are currently led by freshman Lindsey Syrek, who is maintaining a double-double with over 20.3 points/game and 10.2 rebounds/game. Additionally, the introduction of junior transfer Natalie Nickless, who has shot 55% from beyond the arc, has greatly benefitted the Trailblazers. Along with leadership from seniors Emma Caress, Honor Cosby, and Maggie Klemsz, the Trailblazers are off to an incredible season!

The UHS Boys Basketball season began on November 21st with a blowout win over Shortridge. Last season, after an emotional loss in the sectional finals to Tindley, 4 of the 5 members of the starting lineup return for this season. Due to injury, Josh Watson, a major contributor last year, as well as junior transfer Foster Flamion and junior Grant Schepers, have been unable to participate. Led by a variety of juniors, including David Howard, Emerson Halbleib, Ethan Sickels, and Zack Hodgin, this young group is hungry to win its first sectional championship in 3 years following a 20-6 record from last season. Additionally, leadership from seniors Josh Alford and Tyler Wott has been pivotal to the success of the team, who seek vengeance from the heartbreaker against Tindley in the 2015-2016 and 2014-2015 seasons.

The JV and Varsity Lady Blazers play at Anderson Prep tonight, December 1st, and the boys are at Central Christian tomorrow, December 2nd. The next home game is this Saturday, December 3rd, with the boys JV and Varsity teams taking on Speedway High School at 6:00pm and 7:30pm.
