2020: Looking Ahead

With the 2020 presidential race on the rise, several candidates have announced their bid. Here are the names that you should know:

  • Andrew Yang, Democrat
    • “Humanity First”
    • Yang served as the CEO for a test preparation company and then went on to start Venture for America, a non-profit focused on creating economic growth through entrepreneurship.
    • Big Policy:
      • Universal Basic Income: Every American adult over the age of 18 would receive $1,000 per month, helping “Americans to pay their bills, educate themselves, start businesses, be more creative” (Yang 2020).
  • Julian Castro, Democrat
    • “One Nation. One Destiny.”
    • In 2009, Castro was the mayor of San Antonio, Texas. He then went on to serve in the Obama Administration as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
    • Big Policies:
      • Pre-K for the USA: a full day pre-kindergarten program. While serving as mayor, Castro had started Pre-K for USA (San Antonio) with the goal of bettering the quality of education.
      • Universal Health Care
  • Tulsi Gabbard, Democrat
    • “Lead with Love”
    • Gabbard is currently serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Hawaii’s 2nd district and has served in the National Guard. She has done tours in Kuwait and Iraq.
    • Big Policies:
      • Not listed yet, but has been a strong supporter of sustainability, veterans, and criminal justice reform.
  • Kamala Harris, Democrat
    • “For the People”
    • Harris served as the Attorney General for the state of California. She is currently serving as a U.S. senator.
    • Big Policies:
      • Supports Medicare for all
      • Supports tax cuts for the middle class
  • John Delaney, Democrat
    • “Focus on the Future”
    • Delaney was a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of Maryland.
    • Big Policy:
      • Delaney hopes to run as a centrist and seeks to solve issues through bipartisan cooperation.
  • Kirsten Gillibrand, Democrat
    • Gillibrand formerly served in the House of Representatives from the state of New York and then went on to serve as a senator, which is her current position. Gillibrand is also known for her #MeToo advocacy.
    • Big Policy:
      • Gillibrand has long been an advocate for women’s equality.
  • Elizabeth Warren, Democrat
    • Warren is currently serving as a U.S. senator from the state of Massachusetts and has worked in academia as a lecturer and law professor.  
    • Big Policies:
      • Medicare for all
      • Income inequality
  • Donald Trump, Republican
    • “Keep America Great” and “Promises made, promises kept”
    • Trump is currently serving as the president. Formerly, Trump was a businessman involved in real estate, as well as the host for The Apprentice, a television show.
    • Big Policies:
      • Have not formally announced but has previously supported:
        • Immigration reform
  • Pete Buttigieg, Democrat
    • Buttigieg served in the Naval Reserve and is veteran from Afghanistan. He is currently the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana. Buttigieg is the first openly gay Democratic presidential candidate.
